Migration statistics analyse data on the structure and dynamics of international and interregional migration, thus providing a statistical basis for political and administrative decision-making.

From 1996 to 2001, annual migration statistics were available based on local registers of residents and focused on the relocation of main residences both across municipal boundaries within Austria and across the national border. Since 2002 Statistics Austria maintains a database for population statistics (POPREG), which bases upon the Central Register of Residents (ZMR) of the Austrian Ministry of Interior. Registrations and deregistrations of main residences in the ZMR are processed quarterly to the POPREG and classified according to demographic aspects. Thus, from 2002 onwards, migration and population statistics with POPREG share a common database, which ensures full consistency for both statistics. Thus a revision of population statistics, incorporating the results of the register based test census in 2006, rendered necessary also the revision of migration statistics for the reporting years 2002-2007.

The publication thus presents on the hand the results for the revision and on the other hand offers key results for internal and external migration in 2008 complemented by an analytical text and synoptical tables. The appendix of tables contains detailed information on migration movements broken down into demographic and regional categories as well as migration linkages down to the level of political districts for both, revised data for 2002-2007 as well as the latest available reporting year 2008.

The publication is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing the entire content in PDF format and the tables in Excel format as well as additional information at municipal level that is not included in the publication.
