Demographic change is fuelled by a large number of individual decisions, which together lead to changes in the structure of the population. Population development in the Austrian regions is thus determined on the one hand by the number of children born as well as the existing population structure and on the hand by the volume of migrations. Processes of population development are complex, so in-depth demographic problem analysis is required for an adequate description. This publication offers an illustration of the regional dimension of demographic change.
Statistics Austria introduced a register-based database system (POPREG), which is based on the Central Register of Residents (ZMR), for the 2002 reporting year. POPREG can be used to compile population data for all administrative territorial units; these inventories include spatial population movements as well as natural population development. Spatial population movements are based on migration statistics (MIGSTAT), which are also derived from POPREG. This means that harmonised annual population data is now available for all NUTS regions, political districts and municipalities in Austria, which was previously only the case with Population Censuses (the survey date of the most recent census is 15 May 2001).
This publication contains population figures for Austria, its federal provinces (Länder), districts and municipalities at the beginning of 2009 as well as the components of population change in 2008, accompanied by an analysis of trends in population development for the reporting year. In addition to the results of the current reporting year, this publication includes also the revised data for the period from 1st january 2002 to 1st january 2008.
The publication is accompanied by a CD-ROM, which contains the entire text section in PDF format plus the tables in Excel format, and also provides additional data at municipality level (citizenship) beyond the data included in the printed tables.
This publication is available in German only but contains an English summary and English headings for tables and graphs.
