Turnover in industry and construction for December 2021 significantly above pre-crisis level (+44.7%); transport volume in road freight transport decreased in the fourth quarter of 2021

Vienna, 2022-01-28 – The flash estimates for industry and construction (ÖNACE B to F) by Statistics Austria for December 2021 show an increase of the turnover index (+40.0%), a moderate increase of the index of persons employed (+2.2%) and an increase of the index of hours worked (+6.6%) compared to the same month of the previous year.

"Austria's industry and construction sector continues to prove itself as economic locomotive in the Corona crisis and was even able to move up a gear again in December 2021. Turnover was 44.7% above the pre-crisis level of December 2019. The industry and construction sector has thus been able to leave the economic Corona crisis far behind," said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

Considering the industrial and the construction sector separately, the flash estimates for December 2021 show a strong recovery of the turnover index in industry (+45.0%) and in construction (+16.1%) compared to the same month of the previous year. The index of hours worked increased in industry (+6.5%) as well as in construction (+6.7% compared to December 2020). The index of persons employed shows a slight incline in industry (+1.7%) and a positive development in construction (+3.7%).

In the reporting period October 2021, a total of 75 290 enterprises in the entire industry and construction sector turned over €32.9 bn (+23.9%). These figures coupled with a slightly increasing employment (1 021 190 persons, +1.7%). With €27.4 bn in nominal terms, industrial turnover increased by 28.7% in October 2021 compared to the previous year's month. The 39 211 Austrian construction enterprises achieved a turnover of €5.5 bn in October 2021. This corresponds to an increase of 4.6% in nominal terms compared to October 2020.

For the fourth quarter of 2021 the flash estimates for road freight transport by vehicles registered in Austria showed a decrease by 5.3% to 97.1 million tonnes (t). A drop compared to the same period of the preceding year was also registered in the total transport performance on Austrian and foreign territory (6.5 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm)) by 3.3% and in the number of laden journeys (7.0 million) by 5.5%. The transport performance within Austria decreased by 4.8% to 4.6 billion tkm, whereas outside Austria it increased by 0,6% to 1.9 billion tkm.

First preliminary results for road freight transport in 2021 showed an increase by 7.6% to 404.2 million t (2020: 375.6 million t). The total transport performance rose by 4.7% to 27.2 billion tkm (2020: 26.0 billion tkm), whereof inside Austria it increased by 4.4% to 19.6 billion tkm and abroad by 5.5% to 7.7 billion tkm.
