Turnover in industry and construction in October 2021 rose by 13.9% compared to October 2020 and by 11.1% compared to October 2019

Vienna, 2021-11-30 – The flash estimates for industry and construction (ÖNACE B to F) by Statistics Austria for October 2021 show an increase of the turnover index (+13.9%), a moderate increase of the index of persons employed (+1.4%) and a decrease of the index of hours worked (-1.7%) compared to the same month of the previous year.

"Supply bottlenecks and shortages of raw materials have somewhat slowed down the rapid economic upswing of Austria's industry and construction in October 2021, affecting the construction sector in particular. Nevertheless, turnover in October 2021 was 13.9% above the same month last year and 11.1% above the pre-crisis level of October 2019," said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

Considering the industrial and the construction sector separately, the turnover index shows an increase in industry (+16.4%) and a positive development in construction (+2.0%) compared to the same month of the previous year. The index of hours worked decreased in industry (-2.1%) as well as in construction (-0.9%). The index of persons employed shows a slight rise in industry (+0.9%) and a positive development in construction (+2.5%).

In the reporting period August 2021, a total of 75 652 enterprises in the entire industry and construction sector turned over €27.1 bn (+28.6%). These figures coupled with an increasing employment (1 020 658 persons, +1.4%). With €22.2 bn in nominal terms, industrial turnover increased by 33.3% in August 2021 compared to the previous year's month. The 39 331 Austrian construction enterprises achieved a turnover of €4.9 bn in August 2021. This corresponds to an increase of 10.7% in nominal terms compared to the period of the previous year.

In the reporting period January to August 2021, turnover increased by 22.5% compared to the same month of the previous year and amounted to €215.3 bn.
