Number of nights spent in September 2021 at pre-crisis level
“Holidays in Austria were well booked again in September 2021. In the penultimate month of the tourist summer season, overnight stays in Austrian accommodation establishments were 1.9% above the pre-crisis level of September 2019. Once again, bookings by domestic guests were the main driver. Overall, however, the 2021 summer season to date is still 17.2% below the pre-crisis level" says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.
Domestic nights spent stagnated at 3.99 million
An analysis of nights spent by country of origin shows that more than two-thirds (70.3%) of all foreign overnight stays in September 2021 are attributable to guests from Germany (5.38 million), followed by the Netherlands with 0.47 million overnight stays and Switzerland and Liechtenstein (0.33 million). Compared to September 2020, the total number of arrivals rose by 25.4% to 3.53 million, while the number of foreign arrivals - starting from a low level in September of the previous year - increased by 42.1%.
Current summer season stronger than the previous year
The current summer season 2021 (May to September) is still above the level of the season of the previous year. With a plus of 17.9% and a total of 58.34 million overnight stays compared to the same period of the previous year, the current summer season is still 17.2% below the level of the summer season 2019.
Decrease in overnight stays in the previous calendar year compared to 2020
Despite an increase in nights spent in the current summer season, a decrease of 32.3% was recorded for the calendar year to date with 62.1 million overnight stays. The federal states of Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg recorded significant decreases due to different durations of pandemic-related closings, thus the data for 2020 and 2021 are only partially comparable.
