Tourism in Austria reached new record levels with 153 million overnight stays and 46 million guests in 2019

Vienna, 2020-01-27 – 152.64 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation establishments were reported for the calendar year 2019, according to Statistics Austria. Compared to the previous year, the number of nights spent increased by 2.82 million (+1.9%). This is the result of a rise in nights spent for both resident (+1.4% to 39.93 million) and non-resident guests (+2.1% to 112.72 million).

The number of arrivals reached 46.18 million (+3.0%). The number of arrivals of resident guests increased by 1.9% to 14.31 million, the arrivals of non-resident guests rose by 3.4% to 31.87 million.

Number of nights spent by non-resident guests developed positively in 2019

In 2019, 0.37 million more nights spent by guests from Germany than 2018 were registered (+0.7% to 56.66 million). The highest value so far was reached in 1981, when nights spent by Germans reached 66.0 million and a 54.5% share of total nights spent (2019: 37.1%). The Netherlands, the second most important market of origin, closed the year 2019 with 10.35 million nights spent (+3.1%). Overall, the overnight stays of the 15 most important countries of origin largely developed positively, with overnight stays by Romanian guests showing the highest relative increase (+8.8%).

Commercial holiday dwellings or houses particularly popular

Most overnight stays are still observed in 5-/4-star hotels: With 54.34 million overnight stays, there was a 2.7% increase over the previous year (share of total overnight stays: 35.6%). However, the highest relative increase in nights spent was registered in commercial holiday dwellings or houses with 5.9% to 13.81 million (share: 9.0%). Ten years ago, the number of nights spent in this accommodation category reached 7.65 million or 6.1% of total overnight stays.

Tourism intensity in Austria: 14.4 overnight stays per inhabitant

In 2019, the tourism intensity in Austria (i.e., the ratio of overnight stays to inhabitants) was around 14.4 overnight stays (without private accommodation) per inhabitant. This puts Austria in fourth place in an EU comparison, behind Croatia (22.4 overnight stays per inhabitant) and the island states of Cyprus and Malta (20.6 and 19.9 overnight stays per inhabitant). The EU-28 average amounted to 6.3 overnight stays per inhabitant.

Positive start to the 2019/20 winter season

In the first two months of the tourism winter season 2019/20 (November and December 2019), 17.40 million nights spent were registered (+4.5% compared to the same period in 2018). This positive development is based on rises in both November 2019 (+1.4% to 5.30 million) and December 2019 (+5.9% to 12.10 million).
