Regional foreign trade 2017 (preliminary results): all federal states with increases in exports

Vienna, 2018-07-16 – In the year 2017, all nine Austrian federal states registered increases in both exports and imports, according to preliminary results by Statistics Austria. On the export side, the federal states Styria (+11.6%) and Vienna (+10.1%) realised the highest relative increases. In absolute terms, Upper Austria (€2.73 bn) and Styria (€2.25 bn) showed the strongest gains. On the import side, Lower Austria (+11,2% or +€2.50 bn) and Styria (+17,3% or +€2.49 bn) recorded the strongest absolute and relative increases compared to the previous year. The highest external trade values in terms of trade intensity (sum of imports and exports) were observed in Upper Austria, Vienna and Lower Austria – in the order indicated.

Among the Austrian federal states, the largest part of imports was registered in Vienna (€36.43 bn, 24.7% of the overall Austrian imports). Upper Austria (€27.94 bn, 18.9%) and Lower Austria (€24.71 bn, 16.7%) recorded the second and third highest import shares. With more than one quarter, Upper Austria had the largest share in the overall Austrian exports (€36.51 bn, 25.7%), followed by Lower Austria (€21.82 bn, 15.4%) and Styria (€21.55 bn, 15.2%).

Five of the nine federal states showed a foreign trade surplus for the reference period. Upper Austria had the largest surplus (€8.58 bn), whereas Vienna displayed the highest trade deficit (-€16.78 bn).
