PRESS RELEASE:
9.744-186/10
Vienna, 2010-08-19
– How a person aged 10 or older spends a typical day arises from the
results of the Time Use Survey 2008/09, conducted by Statistics Austria.
Out of 24 hours or 1.440 minutes that are at daily disposal, more than
10 ¾ hours are spent for personal care, like sleeping, eating or personal
hygiene. In Austria, 92% of women and 72% of men spend time on household
activities during an average weekday. While women spend an average of
3 ¾ hours, men only spend about 2 hours on housework. On weekdays, employed
persons work 8 hours on average. For leisure activities and social contacts,
4 ¼ hours daily are used during the week, and 6 ½ hours on the weekend.
Watching TV is the leisure activity that occupies most of the time (2 hours
per day). Almost half an hour per day is spent on reading, and every
second Austrian listens about 1 ½ hour per day to music or radio during
other activities.
