Births decreased by 1.7% in 2009; declining numbers in all federal provinces

Vienna, 11 February 2010 – The provisional annual total of live births in Austria was 75 387 in 2009, a decrease by 1.7% compared to the previous year. Adjusted for this year’s leap day, the decrease is only 1.4%. First estimates show that the total fertility rate remains constant at about 1.4 (2008: 1.41). The proportion of live births born out of wedlock was 39.2% in 2009, compared with 38.8% the year before. According to Statistics Austria, the annual total of live births decreased in each single NUTS-2-region, with highest relative decreases in Salzburg (-3.9%), Burgenland (-3.7%) and Carinthia (-3.2%) and lowest in Styria (-0.2%) and Vorarlberg (-0.3%). The largest absolute number in the quarterly total of live births was observed in the 3rd quarter (20 448), the lowest relative decrease in the 4th quarter (-0.1%), the largest in the 1st quarter (-3.8%) of 2009.
