Chicken production slightly increased in 2009

Vienna, 4 February 2010 – In 2009, 70.3 million chickens were slaughtered in Austria, this is 6.7% higher than in the previous year. In the same period the volume of chicken meat increased by 5.9% to 89 906 tons. The hatcheries subject to reporting requirements reported a total number of 100.2 million hatching eggs laid by chickens in 2009, an increase of 20.6% compared to 2008.

Methodical information, definitions:
The survey is conducted every month in all poultry abattoirs that slaughtered at least 5 000 units in the previous year and in all poultry hatcheries with a minimum laying capacity of 1 000 hatching eggs. Information on turkey, geese, ducks and guinea fowl production will not be published for reasons of data protection.
