Women’s Report 2010: Women’s earnings still lower than men’s

Vienna, 28 May 2010 – Women earn 25.5% less than men in Austria. This is the result of an analysis carried out by Statistics Austria on the situation of women in Austria for the "Women’s Report 2010". At the same time, women have successfully caught up in terms of the labour participation rate which rose from 61.4% (1998) to 68.6% (2008) for women aged 15 to 64 years. Yet, this increase in female labour market participation is mostly due to a rise in part-time work. In 2008, approximately 41.5% (1998: 30.7%) of women in employment worked part-time. Labour market participation of women is also important to reduce poverty risk: around 60% of single mothers who do not work are at risk of poverty.
