EU-SILC 2007: Housing costs are a serious burden for single-parent-households, single female households and households at risk-of-poverty

Vienna, 28 May 2009 – In Austria private households on average spend 420 Euro per months or 18% of their household income on housing. According to the survey EU-SILC 2007 carried out by Statistics Austria the share of housing costs is particularly high amongst single-parent-households (31%) and single female households (33%). For households at-risk-of-poverty housing costs are a considerable burden, on average they have to spend 363 Euro, corresponding to 38% of their household income, on housing.

3% of the Austrian population in private households live in dwellings with serious deficiencies, e.g. without a bathroom/without a shower or without a toilet and their dwellings are dark, damp or even mould-infested. 6% of persons at risk-of-poverty and 2% of the persons not at-risk-of-poverty are affected.

In rural areas (municipalities with less than 10.000 inhabitants) the accessibility to services such as groceries, post offices or primary health care is more difficult than in urban regions. Households at-risk-of-poverty are particularly affected.
