EU-SILC 2007: At risk of poverty highest for persistent unemployment

Vienna, 2008-03-16 – Statistics Austria has published the study "Income, Poverty and Living Conditions - Results from EU-SILC 2007". For the reference period, the at-risk-of-poverty threshold was 912 Euro per month for a single person household. For other household types the threshold is increased by 456 Euro for each additional adult and by 274 Euro for each child. According to SILC 2007, 12% of the population were at risk of poverty. The change against the year before corresponds the random variation. Of those at risk of poverty, approximately 400 000 persons (5% of the population) live in manifest poverty. Besides low income they are affected by additional financial restrictions. The prevalence rises with the duration of unemployment. About 37% of those unemployed for at least 12 months are manifestly poor, 52% of them have an income below the poverty threshold. Children and women living alone generally face an increased risk. The study is based on the annual EU-SILC survey in which 6 806 private households participated in 2007.
