Since 2007, 'Austria's cities and towns in figures' - a collaboration between Statistics Austria and the Association of Austrian Cities and Towns - has replaced the 'Statistisches Jahrbuch Österreichischer Städte', which for the past five decades has reported on demographic, economic, ecological and social aspects of cities and towns with more than 10 000 inhabitants and municipalities with 5 000 to 10 000 inhabitants.
The 2007 edition - the first edition of this publication - is divided into five sections, each with a different focus, and contains current figures on topics such as demographic trends, education, culture, transport, tourism and management of public finances. Information is provided on key municipal duties and responsibilities such as water supply and the disposal of waste and wastewater as well as on social and leisure facilities.
The individual sections are preceded by introductory texts giving a brief overview of the contents of the section. More detailed reports deal with a key issue which changes annually - this year, the issue is long-term care provision - while the development of municipal finances, which was traditionally presented as an introduction in the past, is explored in depth as a report in the 'Finances' section. This report was written by Dr Helfried Bauer of the Centre for Public Administration Research (KDZ), while the report on long-term care provision was written by the chairperson of the Social and Health Committee of the Association of Austrian Cities and Towns, Dr Ingrid Holzhammer (Deputy Mayor of the City of Linz) and Mag. Bettina Langeder from the Deputy Mayor's Office.
This volume contains tables with structural data from the Population Census held on 15 May 2001, which are based on the Population Census results announced in the official gazette of the Wiener Zeitung on 17 September 2002. The correction to the Population Census results (inhabitants and number of citizens on conclusion of the claims cases), announced in the Wiener Zeitung on 23 September 2004, is shown in a separate column, although the correction does not cover structural data such as age, gender, marital status and numerous other characteristics included in the Population Census.
The text (PDF) and tables (Excel) are available in electronic form on a CD-ROM, which also contains data from the Population Census not included in the publication as well as housing statistics for 2001.
