Population increase of 20 000 people in 2009 to 8.375 million on 1st January 2010

Vienna, 19 May 2010 – A population growing only by migration and shinking numbers of births facing a slight increase in the numbers of deaths are the main results of Statistics Austria’s population statistics for 2009. In 2009 the Austrian population grew by 20 000 (0.2%) to 8.375 million on January 1, 2010. The increase thus was only half the figure of the year before (2008: +36 700 people or 0.4%). This was mainly a consequence of a significant reduction of migration gains from 34 436 people in 2008 to only 20 596 in 2009. In addition the balance of births and deaths was also negative at -1 037 people. On regional level the highest population growth occurred in Vienna, while only Carinthia experienced a decreasing population. At the beginning of 2010 for the first time more than 1 000 centenarians lived in Austria.

The first quarter of 2010 saw a sustained population growth in Austria. According to the preliminary results the population figure rose by some 8 500 people to 8.384 million on April 1, 2010.
