Migration Balance in 2009 decreasing significantly to +20,600 people

Vienna, 19 May 2010 – In 2009 Austria recorded an international net-migration gain of 20 596 people, about 40% less than in the previous year (+34 436). This reduction is mainly the consequence of a significant increase of emigrations abroad. In 2008 migration statistics, which are derived from data of the Central Register of Residence, registered an inflow of 107 785 people compared to an outflow of 87 189. As in previous years, Austrian citizens had a negative migration balance of -5 100. However, a migration gain of 25 696 people was recorded for foreign citizens. Yet, this was about only two thirds the number of 2008 (+39 412).
