Births decreased by 1.8% in 2009; slight increase in the number of marriages by 0.7%

Vienna, 19 May 2010 – The annual number of live births in Austria in 2009 was 76 344, a decrease of 1.8% compared with 2008. Total fertility rate decreased to 1.39 (2008: 1.41). 39.3% of all live births were born out of wedlock (2008: 38.8%). The balance of births and deaths was negative by -1 037 people.

The annual total of deaths accounted for 77 381 in 2009, an increase of 3.1% compared with the 2008 figures (for methodological reasons see method box in the German version). Life expectancy at birth decreased slightly to 77.4 years for men and 82.9 years for women. The infant mortality rate was 3.8 per thousand live births.

In 2009 the number of marriages was 35 469. Compared with the 2008 figures this is a slight increase of 0.7%.
