Number of naturalisations reduced by nearly a half in the first quarter 2010

Vienna, 12 May 2010 – From January to March 2010 1 146 people were granted Austrian citizenship. Compared to the first quarter 2009 when 2 140 people obtained citizenship, the number fell by 46.4%. Due to an amendment of law, obtaining Austrian citizenship has been more difficult for resident aliens since 23 March 2006. As a consequence, the number of naturalisations accounting for a total of 10 695 people in the first quarter 2006 has decreased continuously. Another amendment of law came into force on 1 January 2010.
