Vienna, 27 April 2010 - According to Statistics Austria the total number of families reached 2 335 000 in 2009. About four out of ten families (39%; 918 000) are families without children living in the same household. 106 000 mothers care for at least one child below 15 years of age without a partner living in the same household. Those lone mothers represent about one out of eight women (13.5%) with children below 15 years of age. 6% of all married couples and 25% of all cohabiting couples (with children under 15 years) are families where at least one child is a non-common child. Together 10% of all couples with children are stepfamilies (or reconstituted families). All figures are based on microcensus data for the year 2009.
