Vienna, 2010-02-26 – Totalling 75 629, the provisional number
of deaths during the year 2009 was 1.6% higher than in the same period
of the previous year (2008: 74 430). Adjusted for the 2008 year’s leap
day, however, the increase is 1.9%. Taking into account the growing
number of elderly people, first estimates for the life expectancy at
birth show an increase by 0.1 years for both sexes, up to 77.7 years
for males and 83.1 years for females. As live births decreased by 1.7%
(see press release dated February, 11th 2010), the balance
of births and deaths was negative by -242 people in 2009. The infant
mortality rate (3.7‰) was below 4.0‰ for the fourth subsequent year.
