Vienna, 23 February 2010 – Totalling 35 420, the provisional number of marriages in 2009 was 0.9% higher than the number of marriages in 2008. This stops the trend that has been observed since 2005, namely a falling number of weddings (2006: -5.9%; 2007: -2.4%, 2008: -2.1%). In 2009 couples preferred to marry in August (5 109) followed by September (5 055). The annual total of marriages increased in each single NUTS-2-region with the exception of Vorarlberg (-6.6%) and Lower Austria (-1.0%). The highest relative increase was observed in Burgenland (+8.8%).
