Vienna, 17 February 2009 – According to the preliminary results of Statistics Austria on January 1, 2010 about 8.375 Million people lived in Austria, about 19 600 people (+0.2%) more than at the beginning of 2009. The population growth thus nearly halved in comparison to the previous year (2008: +36 668 people). The number of foreign citizens rose by about 25 000 (+2.9%) to 895 600, with the number of EU-citizens mounting distinctly stronger than the number of third country nationals. On a regional level, more than half of the population increase of 2009 concentrated on Vienna.
