Stabilisation on the labour market in the first quarter 2010 due to more self-employed

Vienna, 2010-06-16 – According to Statistics Austria, the number of people in employment amounted to a total of 4.023 million in the first quarter of 2010 and thus remained at the same level as in the first quarter of 2009. Contrary to former quarters, the number of self-employed increased by 15 600 whereas the number of employees decreased (-14 200). However, the number of full-time jobs for employees dropped by 33 000, whereas the number of part-time employees went up by 18 500 compared to the first quarter of 2009.

The number of people in unemployment amounted to a total of 198 000 in the first quarter of 2010, remaining almost unchanged compared to the first quarter of 2009 and resulting in the same unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) of 4.7%. Men were affected by a slight rise (+0.2pp) in the unemployment rate whereas the female unemployment rate slightly decreased (-0.2pp).
