Unemployment trend: Flash estimates for the second quarter of 2010 show positive trends

Vienna, 2010-07-01 – In the second quarter of 2010, the number of unemployed according to international definitions declined to a total of 187 100, a decrease of 11 700 persons (5.9%) compared to the second quarter of 2009. According to Statistics Austria, the unemployment rate is estimated to be 4.4% and therefore below last year’s corresponding figure (4.6%). However, unemployment rates of men and women show different trends. For men, the unemployment rate decreased from 4.8% in the first quarter of 2009 to currently 4.3%, whereas the unemployment rate of women slightly increased from 4.4% to 4.5%. When compared to the first quarter of 2010, the unemployment rate of men declined by 0.9 percentage points, the unemployment rate of women rose by 0.4 percentage points. The unemployment rate of young people between 15 and 24 years fell (both in comparison to last year’s quarter and to the previous quarter) to 8.4% in the second quarter of 2010.
