Decrease in jobs nearly stopped in the fourth quarter of 2009; less full-time, more part-time jobs and rising unemployment in 2009

Vienna, 25 March 2010 - According to Statistics Austria, the number of employed decreased slightly to a total of 4.089 million in the fourth quarter of 2009 (4.097 million in the fourth quarter of 2008). The decline was much smaller than in the third and second quarter (-19,000 resp. -28,000). However, the number of full-time jobs dropped by 40,000 whereas the number of part-time employed went up by 32,000 compared to the fourth quarter of 2008.

The number of people in unemployment amounted to a total of 200 000 in the fourth quarter of 2009. This was an increase of 32,000 persons in comparison with the situation in the fourth quarter of 2008. The unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) was 4.7% compared to 4.0% in 2008. Only men were affected by the increase in unemployment. Male unemployment increased from 3.6% to 4.9% whereas female unemployment remained unchanged at 4.4%.

The whole year 2009 was characterized by an increase in the number of unemployed persons (204,000; +42,000 compared to 2008) and a decline of (male) full-time jobs (-60,000 compared to 2008). The number of (female) part-time employed increased by +48,000. The number of people in employment decreased slightly to a total of 4.078 million (4.090 million in 2008).
