Vienna, 18 September 2009 - According to Statistics Austria, the number of people in employment decreased slightly to a total of 4080 million in the second quarter of 2009. However, the number of full-time jobs decreased even by 77 000 whereas the number of part-time employed increased by 50 000 compared with the second quarter of 2008. The employment rate for people at working age (15 to 64 years) was 71.7%, also lower than one year before (72.3%). The number of unemployed amounted to 199 000 persons, an increase of 53 000 persons in comparison with the situation in the second quarter of 2008. The unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) was 4.6% (3.4% in 2008). Young people increasingly faced difficulties to enter the labour market. Their unemployment rate rose from 6.8% (second quarter of 2008) to 10.0% in the second quarter of 2009. Both data on employment and unemployment are based on ILO definitions.
