Labour market affected by economic crisis in the first quarter of 2009

Vienna, 18 June 2008 - According to Statistics Austria, the number of people in employment rose slightly to a total of 4 022 million in the first quarter of 2009. However, the number of full-time jobs decreased by 53 000 whereas the number of part-time employed increased by 59 000 compared with the first quarter of 2008. The employment rate for people at working age (15 to 64 years) was 70.8%, almost the same as one year before (71.0%). The number of unemployed amounted to 197 000 persons, an increase of 22 000 persons in comparison with the situation in the first quarter of 2008. The unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) was 4.7% (4.2% in 2008). Young people increasingly faced difficulties to enter the labour market. Their unemployment rate rose from 8.1% (first quarter of 2008) to 9.2% in the first quarter of 2009. Both data on employment and unemployment are based on ILO definitions.
