Vienna, 2010-06-11
– Diseases of the circulatory system are still the leading cause of
death in Austria; this was confirmed by the latest data of Statistics
Austria. In 2009, 77 381 deaths occurred. 43% of all deaths are due to
diseases of the circulatory system, 25% due to malignant neoplasm. 53
out of 100 deaths refer to women, 47 to men. Absolute figures show a
decline of mortality by 1.2% over the past ten years. However, age standardized
mortality, taking account of the increasing share of elderly people
in the Austrian society, even declined by 16% over the same period.
