World Cancer Day on 4 February 2009; still one in four people dies from cancer, but age-standardised incidence and mortality rates tend to decline

Vienna, 3 February 2009 - Every year, about 19 500 new cases of malignant cancer in males and 17 400 in females are diagnosed in Austria. 9 000 women and 10 000 men died from cancer in 2007. Cancer therefore accounts for a quarter of all deaths. However, according to Statistics Austria' s data, age-standardised incidence and mortality rates tend to decline in the last years, at least partly due to earlier diagnoses and better treatments.
