Air pollutant emissions decrease in Austria

Vienna, 2010-06-15 - Between 1995 and 2008 the "Austrian" air pollutant emissions were considerably reduced in many cases. Only emissions due to persons living in Austria as well as enterprises and institutions registered in Austria were considered. The highest reductions in emissions were achieved for sulphur dioxide - SO2 (-50.0%) and carbon monoxide - CO (-45.9%). Emissions of Non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC; -25.4%), methane (CH4; -24.8%), nitrous oxide (N2O; -14.5%) as well as ammonia (NH3; -10.4%) considerably decreased; furthermore, a slight decrease of particulate matter PM10 (-1.2%) was reached. On the other hand, between 1995 and 2005 emissions of NOx increased by 27.7%; nevertheless, between 2006 and 2008 they could again be reduced by 8.6%. The emissions of CO2 were 25.3% higher in 2008 compared to 1995; emissions peaked in 2005.
