Environmental conditions and behaviour; results of the Micro census 4th Quarter 2007

Vienna, 29 April 2009 - The new publication of the Micro census Environmental conditions and behaviour 2007 states that the respondents evaluate the environmental conditions in Austria for drinking water, the water quality of lakes and rivers, the availability of premium food and the landscape to more than 90% as good. In contrast, the general air quality is evaluated as 81.2% good and the noise situation as only 65.5%. Greenhouse effect and climate change (31.7) constitutes the major environmental problem, followed by the increasing traffic volume (26.2). About 38% of the interviewees appraise their quality of live as “very good”, 55% as “good”.

38.9% of respondents state that they feel disturbed by noise in their home environment. For 64.2% of Austrians who report 2007 noise exposure, traffic is the main cause of disturbance; this implies a considerable decline compared to 2003 (73.5%). 8.5% report activities for noise protection in their housing area. The activities lead in 56.8% of cases to a reduced noise exposure, in 36.7% the level of noise remains constant. 21.4% are disturbed by odours and exhaust fumes and 26.6% inform about a disturbance by dust and soot in their home environment.

Further results of the study: about two thirds of the respondents buy organic products; 67.1% purchase organic milk and milk products, 63.7% organic fruit and vegetables. Most of the people separate their waste: 95.3% waste paper and 92.7% waste glass. More then 90% of the respondents use at least sometimes a private motorcar for daily traffic, 57.8% use public transport. The image of the public transport system in Austria is generally rated very well.
