Many school repeaters are not successful

Vienna, 25 February 2009 – In Austria, about 40.000 pupils do not fulfil all requirements to progress to the next grade at the end of each school year. Among those who opt for repeating the class, many fail again. According to "Bildung in Zahlen 2007/08", a publication recently published by Statistics Austria, more than one third of all repeaters in intermediate technical and vocational schools and in second stage of academic secondary schools fail the class again. A lot of pupils who do not pass the school year don’t even opt for a repetition, but change directly to another type of school.
