1999- 2009: Vineyard area surface declined by 6%, number of holdings by 37%

Vienna, 2010-07-15 – Statistics Austria recorded a vineyard area of 45 586 ha in 2009, about 6% less than in 1999. The number of holdings amounted to 20 181 and thus shows a significant decline compared to 1999 (-37.0%). The vineyard area 2009 comprised 29 820 ha (65.5%) of white wine and 15 713 ha (34.5%) of red wine. Whereas the acreage of white wine decreased (-17.5% compared to 1999), the red wine area constantly increased during the last years (+27.2% compared to 1999). The most important varieties of white wine were Grüner Veltliner (45.3%), Welschriesling (11.6%), Müller Thurgau (6.9%) and Weißer Burgunder (6.4%). The red wine area consisted mainly of the varieties Zweigelt (40.8%) Blaufränkisch (20.6%) and Blauer Portugieser (10.3%).
