Austrian agriculture covers most of domestic food demand

Vienna, 30 April 2010 – According to Statistics Austria´s supply balance sheets for the past crop year 2008/2009 Austrian agriculture produced about 5.7 million tons of cereal, 807 700 tons of fruit, 632 100 tons of vegetables, 756 900 tons of potatoes, 320 100 tons of oil seeds, 3.1 million tons of sugar beet and 3.0 million hl of wine.

In order to cover domestic demand 1.4 million tons of cereals, 1.3 million tons of fruit and vegetables, 170 200 tons of potatoes, 579 200 hl of wine, 474 600 tons of oil seeds and 341 100 tons of vegetable oil were imported.

Domestic production of wine and cereal exceeded domestic demand by 18% and 5%, respectively; the production of fruit covered 63%, that of vegetables 60% and that of vegetable oils 27% of the domestic demand.

The total agricultural foreign trade volume amounted to 15.8 billion euro (imports: 8.3 billion euro; exports: 7.5 billion euro). This corresponded to a share of 7.5% of the total foreign trade volume of 209.1 billion euro.
