Decrease of 21% in wine production 2009

Vienna, 01 March 2010 According to Statistics Austria the wine production 2009 reached an amount of 2 351 900 hl. This result means a decrease of 21% compared to the previous year and is 9% less than the harvest average of the past five years.

The comparison of federal provinces revealed that Lower Austria’s total wine production was 1,5 mio. hl (-25% on 2008), which was 7% under the five-years average. Burgenland achieved a similar moderate wine production of 709 600 hl (-11% to 2008). An even stronger harvest loss was registered for Styria with 155 700 hl (-28% to 2008) and for Vienna with 16 900 hl (-19% to 2008), where hail caused severe damage.

The volume of Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein decreased to 2.0 mio. hl (-15% to 2008) whereas the decline for Wein and Landwein to 290 700 hl (-49% to 2008) was even more pronounced.
