Livestock as at 1 December 2009: unchanged swine stock but more sheep and goats

Vienna, 23 February 2010 – As reported by Statistics Austria the swine stock remains nearly unchanged (-0.5% to 3 137 000 pigs compared to June 2009) while the number of sheep and goats (sheep: +3.5% to 345 000 animals, goats: +9.1% to 68 200 animals compared to December 2008) shows significant growth. Furthermore a total bovine livestock of around 2 026 000 cattle was recorded nationwide. This corresponds to a marginal rise of 0.7% since June 2009.

Methodical information, definitions: The survey (based on EU Regulation (EC) No 1165/2008 concerning livestock and meat statistics) was conducted in December 2009. Swine, sheep and goats stocks were recorded by means of sampling at around 7 000 agricultural holdings. The bovine livestock was determined by the use of administrative data sources (Central Cattle Database).
