More root and tuber vegetables; production losses within leafy vegetables and brassicas

Vienna, 23 November 2009 – According to Statistics Austria, the vegetable production in 2009 amounted to 594.600 tons which, despite of reductions of harvested area (–4%), meant a surplus of 4% compared to the previous year. A gain of 10% was noted in relation to the average production of the last five years. The increase of harvested vegetables was mainly caused by the group of root and tuber vegetables including pulses (+7% to 2008). Vegetables cultivated for fruit also showed a slight rise of production amounts (+3% to 2008), chiefly induced by area expansion, whereas the harvest of leafy and stalked vegetables including brassicas stayed on the previous year´s level (–1%) as the wet summer weather - regionally combined with the occurrence of hail or floods - caused considerable yield losses.
