Federal provinces (Länder)

In accordance with Article 2 of the Federal Constitution Act, Austria is a federation of the following independent provinces: Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Vienna.

The principle of federation is reflected in the fact that the federal provinces have their own authority in legislative matters (through the provincial parliaments) and administrative matters (with the provincial government being the highest authority) and that they are involved in federal legislation through the Federal Council (Bundesrat).
